The restoration represents a Halifax which flew 128 missions during WWII - the record for this type.As an outstanding example of aircraft restoration, the Handley Page Halifax MK III at the Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial stands as a tribute to all allied air & ground crew of Bomber Command. Of 6,178 built, not one Halifax was saved for posterity after hostilities, so this is a unique example. Small wonder that surviving veterans, their families and visitors come from around the world to see this aircraft.
The project, undertaken largely by volunteers commenced in 1984, shortly after the formation of the Museum and work still continues. The aircraft is named after the most illustrious Halifax to have flown with Bomber Command, the legendary "Friday the 13th" LV907, which flew 128 successful missions with 158 Squadron, from Lissett, East Yorkshire. This aircraft was dismantled for scrap after the war at the York Aircraft Repair Depot (YARD), which was operated by Handley Page at Clifton Moor airfield, near York.

There is,actually, another Halifax in Canada that is in fact more authentic than than this example as it was rescued and restored to a very high standard after being recovered from a fiord in Norway where it crash landed on ice during the the second world war. The example at the Yorkshire Air Museum is a replica or a complex composite,made up of some original parts and modern fabricated parts. The wings, foe example are from another Handley Page aircraft the 'Hastings' and the tail and nose sections were built from scratch incorporating large amounts of wood for frames etc. to save weight.
