This is a page from the late 17th century marine atlas, Le Neptune François ou receuil des cartes marines, originally by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot, 1632-1712, and pirated by the Mortier brothers in Amsterdam. Accurate maritime charts were eagerly sought after in this period since they ensured a voyage would be safe and profitable. This lavish production was one of the most famous created in this period and charts the coasts of Britain and Europe. It is appropriate that such a volume was gifted to the Museum by a sea captain, Captain William Orr of Greenock, in 1878.
