This gift box is like thousands sent to First World War soldiers serving in France or Belgium on Christmas Day 1914. It was paid for by contributions made to the Sailors & Soldiers Christmas Fund set up by Princess Mary. All boxes contained a Christmas card and a picture of the Princess. In addition boxes contained chocolate, tobacco, pipes or sweets. Gifts and supplies were also sent from friends and family.
