Commissioning and development are the stages that happen before a programme is produced.
It can take months of hard work on tasks such as finalising the format of the show, or finding the perfect cast and team to work with.
To find out more, we've spoken to Craig Orr who is a commissioning and development executive for MTV. Since starting his career on a graduate scheme, Craig has played an instrumental role in producing some of MTV’s biggest shows including Geordie Shore, Ex On The Beach and Just Tattoo of Us.

What skills do I need?
As well as solid industry knowledge, a keen interest in what makes audiences tick and a passion for entertainment, you will need:
- Great team work skills
- Leadership skills
- The ability to generate creative ideas
- Strong written communication and attention to detail, especially in spelling and grammar.

A similar role to a commissioning and development executive is a tv or film producer. TV and film producers plan and manage the business side of creating television programmes and films.
What to expect if you want to be a TV or film producer
- TV or film producer average salary: Variable. You may be self-employed/freelance
- TV or film producer typical working hours: 39 to 41 hours per week. You could work irregular hours and also away from home, and on evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
What qualifications do you need to be a TV or film producer?
You could get into this role via a university course or a college course such as a Level 3 Diploma or a T-level in Media, Broadcast and Production (England only). You can also do an apprenticeship, a broadcast training scheme or specialist training courses run by private training providers, or work towards the role.
