Can you make a new word?
Different letters make different sounds. These sounds go together to make up words.
Watch Kim, Beth and Patrick have fun making a new word. See if you can make a new word too!
We open on the three children hard at work on something in a garden. They’re making a new invention and are putting together the final pieces. The invention seems to be a miniature toy skateboard with a stick upright on it like the mast of a ship. There’s a big leaf attached to the ’mast’ that mimics the sail of a ship. Dad comes over to see what they’ve been working on.
DAD: What’s that you’ve got there kids?
BETH: It’s our new invention. It’s a…uhh… thingamabobber…?
DAD: A thingamabobber? Well if it’s a new invention it needs a new name! Why don’t we make a brand new word for this fantastic new invention?
The kids are all pleased at this suggestion and instantly start thinking.
DAD: So this new invention is almost a boat… but not quite. Why don’t we make it have a name that’s alllmost boat… but not quite? Boat is made up of different parts ’Buh’, ’oh’ and ’teh’. Boat. Why don’t we swap one of those sounds with a new one and make a whole new word!
BETH: Uhhhh… Boat… boat…Coat!
DAD: Great job!
PATRICK: But that’s not a new word!
DAD: Hmm… Ok lets try another one.
KIM: Uhhh… Go…Goat!
PATRICK: Bahhhh (goat noise). Goat isn’t a new word either.
DAD: Ok, one more go, something brand new, that’s never been heard before.
PATRICK: I’ve think I’ve got it! Hoat! Huh…Oat. Hoat!
DAD: Perfect, I’ve never heard of a hoat! That’s a brand new word.
The kids put their new invention on the ramp and let it go as Dad says;
DAD: So, should we see how fast this ’hoat’ really is then?
End.
