Milo: Hi, I’m Milo, and I’m a Buddhist.
And this is a Buddhist temple. It is home to Buddhist monks and nuns, but anyone is allowed to visit as long as they are respectful.
The outside has interesting statues, and I like the way the building looks with all the designs around the windows and on the roof.
I also like how our temple is surrounded by nature. It makes me feel peaceful whenever I get here. It’s a good feeling to have when I worship.
Whenever Buddhists enter the temple, we remove our shoes and hats to show respect.
Inside, there is always an image or a statue of the Buddha. Our statue is surrounded with candles and flowers.
Most Buddhist temples are built to represent the five elements: earth, air, fire, water, and wisdom.
And in our temple, the murals on the walls show the life of the Buddha from birth to death.
During services, monks lead worshippers in chants and meditation.
Meditation is very important to all Buddhists. It helps us to concentrate and deepens our connection to the Buddha’s teachings.

Ways of worship
At the temple, Buddhists worship, study the Buddha’s teachings and meditate. They can worship in different ways.
Here are some things which take place at the Buddhist temple.
Buddhists take off their shoes when they enter the temple.
Buddhists will sometimes sit with their feet tucked under them, their hands together and bow to the image of the Buddha.
Buddhists show thanks to the Buddha in puja, the Buddhist word for ‘worship’.
In meditation, people sit, concentrate and reflect on the Buddha’s teachings.
Buddhists can also worship through chanting by repeating phrases from Buddhist texts.
Some Buddhists worship by putting gifts, such as food, flowers and lit candles in front of an image or statue of the Buddha.
Buddhist monks lead sermons. These are talks based on Buddhist teachings.
