Why do you need to count?

Counting is a useful thing to do.
Counting on and back in the correct order is a maths super-power.
You can count things like fingers, stones, steps and even pieces of fruit. Or you can count to find how much you have left of something.
You can even count back to zero to start a race!

Counting in a line
You can make counting easier by putting the things you want to count in a line.
Take a look at this group of shell decorations.

You can rearrange them into a line to count them.

The last number is four, so there are four shells altogether.
Example 1

How many flowers are there?
✓ There are 3 flowers.
Start counting at the end of the line. As you count, say the numbers in order.
one… two… three

Example 2

Here are some beads. How many are there?
✓ There are 4 beads.
Count all the beads from one end of the line to the other.
The last number counted is the number of the beads altogether.
There are 4 beads.

Example 3

Here is a number track. Can you work out the missing number?
✓ Point at the numbers on the number track as you count them.
Count along the number track saying the numbers in order.
When you reach the missing number, remember the number you have counted. This will be your missing number.
It's 4!
