Music has a heartbeat, just like we do. It can get faster or slower, but it doesn’t jump around - it stays steady and it never stops.
When Bella is struggling with making bread, Harry explains that keeping a steady beat can help - it’s something you can feel and move to - like a heartbeat or a ticking clock.
Try tapping along to the steady beat of Harry and Bella’s song. Notice the steady pulse!
INTERIOR RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DAY - Bella is kneading a small, flat piece of dough.
BELLA: Oddio! Not again! (sighing, to the dough) Why you look-a so flat and sad!
Bella looks fed up. Harry enters, with a pen and notebook in his hand.
HARRY: (gradually taking in the scene) Morning Bella! How's the bread com- Oh… dear…
Bella lifts a cloth off a bowl of dough and shows it to Harry.
BELLA: (upset) It won't rise-a!
HARRY: (kindly, looking at the dough) Ah…
Harry puts down his pen and notebook.
BELLA: (sighing) Ah! This is not-a Bella's day!
HARRY: (calmly, gesturing to the restaurant) Look, it's really quiet out there this morning - how about I give you a hand with the baguettes? It seems like you just need to find your groove.
BELLA: (sniffing, grateful) Sì.
HARRY: You know, I often find keeping a steady beat can help when I'm cleaning the dishes…
Bella picks up an egg-timer showing it to Harry.
BELLA: Ah! (cheerily and with a wink) A steady beat?
Harry nods and places his hand on his chest to explain.
HARRY: Yes, it's like a pulse. A rhythm that keeps on going. It can really help when you're working!
Bella looks unsure.
HARRY: I actually have a song - if you want to hear it?
BELLA: Sì, sure!
Harry winds up the egg timer, creating a steady ticking noise - a simple backing for the song. He starts to sing a work song in 4/4 and kneads the bread to the beat as he goes.
HARRY: (singing) Count together everyone, making bread is so much fun. 1, 2, 3, 4, come on guys, knead to the beat for the perfect rise!
Harry works to the beat but Bella is kneading the dough completely out of time.
BELLA: (unimpressed) It didn't work!
HARRY: (encouragingly) Try again, together with me! I'll count out the beats this time to help!
BELLA: Okay.
HARRY: (starting the timer again) 1, 2, 3, 4!
Harry sings the song again, and this time Bella slowly gets into the groove, kneading the dough in time to the beat.
HARRY: (singing) Count together everyone, making bread is so much fun.
HARRY / BELLA: (singing) 1, 2, 3, 4…
HARRY: (singing enthusiastically) Come on guys!
HARRY / BELLA: (singing) Knead to the beat for the perfect rise!
Harry and Bella continue kneading the dough together in time.
HARRY / BELLA: (singing) Count together everyone, making bread is so much fun. 1, 2, 3, 4, come on guys, knead to the beat for the peerrrrfeeect rise!
HARRY / BELLA: Ayyy!
They high-five each other in celebration.
INTERIOR RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DAY - LATER - Harry brushes flour off his hands and Bella enters from off-screen with a tray of steaming hot, freshly baked baguettes from the oven. They are golden and perfectly risen.
BELLA: Here we go! Another batch!
They both raise their cups of tea and Bella goes to take a bite of one of the hot baguettes.
BELLA: Aahh, bravo Harry, bravo!
The timer pings before Bella can taste the baguette. They both look worried as they realise they have forgotten to serve the customers in the restaurant.
BELLA: Oh my goodness, our customers, we forgot! Go, go, go, go!
Harry scrambles to grab his stuff and runs out of the kitchen. Bella holds her hands to her head in worry. She turns to the camera with a worried expression.
BELLA: Oops!
THE END.
