What is a musical performance?
A performance is when a musician plays for other people. This could be in:
- a concert
- a show
- an audition
A music performance can include singers, a musician playing on their own or groups of musicians playing together.
A big group of musicians playing together at the same time is called a band or an orchestra.

What skills do we need to perform?
Musicians of any level can build up their performance skills. Here are four top tips.
Practice - Musicians have to practice to make sure they are ready to perform. Sometimes when we perform, we can get nervous. Musicians practice so that they can still play their best even when they are nervous.
Prepare - Make sure you have everything ready for your performance. This might include the music or setting your instrument up.
Express yourself - Music is a great way to share emotions and feelings. Really think about the feeling you are trying to share when you perform.
Enjoy it - Performing in front of others can be really fun! Your performance will bring joy to everybody listening!

TWINS: It must be… bin day!
GIRL 1: We’re supposed to be making instruments out of recycling remember. My Great Granny Gracie taught me hot to make this.
BOY 1: Ooh! Soggy-Froggies.
TEACHER: Nice work guys! You can perform your instruments at the end in front of the whole class.
ALL: Perform in front of the whole class?
GIRL 2: We just need confidence. Oh, it must be in here somewhere.
TEACHER: Maybe this will help you find your confidence.
POLLY: Where have they gone? They must be around here somewhere?
VOICE: Ey! Polystyrene you’re on in two minutes.
POLLY: Two minutes! Where’s my band?
GIRL 1: Hi.
Hi. Hi! Congratulations guys you are my new band.
GIRL 1: Sorry, what?
BOY 1: Are you sure? We’re kinda rubbish.
TWINS: And super scared.
POLLY: But music isn’t scary.
GIRL 1: But people are.
POLLY: It don’t matter about them. What matters is the music and music is about showing people who you are. What you like?
TWINS: We like noise!
BOY 1: I like frogs!
POLLY: Keep that strumming coming.
GIRL 2: There’s nothing in here about confidence, and I’ve got nothing to play.
BOY 1: Play your book.
TWINS: Yeah, play your book. Play your book! Play your book!
GIRL 1: Hey, this is sounding great.
VOICE: Polly, you’re on!
POLLY: Okay guys, this is it.
Good boys and girls should be seen and not heard.
Yeah right! A 1-2-3-4!

GIRL 2: Your rhythm was incredible!
GIRL 1: Your book was incredible!
