Watch: What are nouns?
NARRATOR
Oh, look! There’s some thing sleeping in the trees!
Common nouns are the names of things, that’s people, places or objects, while a proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or thing.
Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter, whereas common nouns don’t.
LEROY THE LIZARD MONSTER
(yawns) Oh! It’s you! Some people call me ‘a thing’. But I am Leroy, Leroy the Lizard Monster!
(growls) Leroy is my name. That’s a proper noun. Leroy. And so is Lizard Monster, that’s what I am. Leroy the Lizard Monster!
I live in a tree. That is a common noun.
And I love sleeping in my bed. Bed! That’s also a common noun! (yawns)
[LOUD CHAINSAW NOISES]
LEROY THE LIZARD MONSTER
I hate being woken by noisy people with chainsaws! Chainsaws is a common noun and I hate them!
[SNAPPING NOISES, LOUD BELCH]

Types of nouns
There are two types of nouns - common nouns and proper nouns.
Common nouns are the names of things (places or objects).
Proper nouns are the names of a particular person, place or thing. They always begin with a capital letter.
Leroy is a monster and lives in a tree.
'Leroy' is a proper noun and 'monster' and 'tree' are common nouns.
