What are odd and even numbers?
An even number is a number that can be shared equally into two groups.
For example, these 4 cubes can be shared into two equal groups of 2 cubes.
So 4 is an even number.

An odd number cannot be shared equally into two groups.
For example, these 3 cubes cannot be shared into two equal groups. You have a group of 2 cubes and a group with 1 cube.
So 3 is an odd number.

Equal groups
There are lots of ways to describe numbers.
One of the ways to describe a number is whether it is an odd number or an even number.
An even number is a number that can be shared equally into 2 groups.
For example, these 6 apples can be split into two equal groups of 3 apples.

An odd number cannot be shared equally into 2 groups.
For example, these 5 oranges cannot be shared equally. You have a group of 3 oranges and a group of 2 oranges.

Example 1

True or false? 11 is an even number.
✓ False.
If you share the counters into two groups, the groups will not be equal.

You can make the groups equal but there will be one counter left over.

Example 2

True or false? 12 is an even number.
✓ True.
You can share 12 into two equal groups.

You can also put the counters into groups of two and all the counters will be used up.

Example 3

True or false? There is a rule for odd and even numbers.
✓ True.
All numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are odd numbers.

All numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 are even numbers.
