Make a homemade Mother's Day sugar scrub gift
It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday 30th March 2025, so here on Blue Peter we thought we’d give you an idea for a quick, cheap and easy homemade gift that anyone special in your life will love!

What is a sugar scrub?
This is a sugar scrub that you use in the shower to exfoliate the skin (get rid of all the dead bits) and leaves it feeling soft and smooth after you wash it off. These sugar scrub recipes will last in an air-tight jar for 2-3 weeks. PLEASE DO NOT EAT IT, it’s for use on the skin only! Also, check that you or whoever you are giving it to doesn’t have any allergies, skin conditions or super sensitive skin before using.
How do I make it?
This sugar scrub comes in two different scents, peppermint or lemon and honey.
Remember, you may want to grab a grown-up to help!
Peppermint scrub:
A lovely, refreshing peppermint scrub to leave skin looking and smelling fresh as a daisy!
For this you will need:
A clean, glass jar (which you can decorate however you like)
300g sugar (you can use any kind, we used granulated)
100 ml of oil (you can use olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil)
A few drops/a dribble of peppermint extract or peppermint essential oil.
A few drops of green food colouring
Method:
Put the sugar in a bowl and add the oil and peppermint extract/essential oil
Mix until your scrub is sticky, but not sloppy
If your mixture is too dry, add a little more olive/coconut oil. If it is too wet, add a little more sugar (just a bit at a time)
Then add a couple of drops of green food colouring and mix well to make it a pretty pastel green
Add your mixture to a jam jar you decorated earlier and screw the lid on tight
Enjoy giving your gift!
Lemon and honey scrub:
A lovely, citrus-smelling scrub that softens skin and will revitalise your whole body!
For this you will need:
A clean, glass jar (which you can decorate however you like)
300g sugar (you can use any kind, we used granulated)
100 ml of oil (you can use olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil)
The juice of one lemon
Two TBSP of runny honey
A few drops of yellow food colouring
Method:
Put the sugar in a bowl and add the oil, lemon juice and honey (get help cutting and juicing the lemon if needed)
Mix until your scrub is sticky, but not too sloppy (this one will be runnier than the peppermint one because of the lemon juice).
If your mixture is too dry, add a little more olive/coconut oil. If it is too wet, add a little more sugar (just a bit at a time)
Then add a couple of drops of yellow food colouring and mix well to make it a pretty pale yellow
Add your mixture to a jam jar you decorated earlier and screw the lid on tight
Enjoy giving your gift!
Directions for use:
Use every two-three days. Apply onto wet skin in the shower and rub in gently. Wash off well in the shower. Enjoy softer skin! Use the scrub within 2-3 weeks of making it. Try not to get any water in the jar when using it.
AND REMEMBER: Check that you and the person you are giving it to doesn’t have allergies to any of the ingredients and although it will smell yummy, don’t eat it!
