Howdy there everyone!
I’m Oti and today we are going to create a line dance at home.
Yee-haw!
We are going to take small steps together as a family, to boost our confidence, even if we might be feeling a little bit wobbly.
Now to create our living room line dance, we need to learn a few simple moves.
Now, don’t worry if you don’t get the moves right,
It’s all about having fun, working together and keeping going!
Our first move is four heel taps.
We go heel, tap, heel, tap,
Heel, tap, heel, tap.
Great, now let's do it again on the other side.
We have one, two, three, four.
Brilliant!
Now our next move is the grapevine tap.
For this, you are going to take a side step, then step the other foot behind,
Side step again and bring your feet together to tap.
Now you're going to repeat the same thing on the other side.
We go side, step behind, side, tap.
Now we're going to do this four times.
Are you ready? Let's go!
One…
Two…
Three…
Last one…
And four!
Perfect!
Now, our final move is a box step.
For this one, we're going to go two steps forward…
That’s it!
And two steps back.
One more time!
Two steps forward and two steps back.
Brilliant!
Did you manage to follow and keep together ok?
Now don’t worry if you didn’t, with practice and working together it will feel a little bit easier.
Now remember just to take one step at a time.
So, are you ready to put all our moves together?
If you are, shout "yee-haw!"
Great! Let's go in five, six, seven… heel taps.
We go one, two, three, four.
Other side, one, two, three… now grapevine.
We go, side, behind, side, tap.
Side, behind, side, two more.
Side, behind, side, tap.
Side, behind, box steps.
One, last one, two.
Well done everyone!
Shall we go again, but this time a little bit faster?
Ok… Five, six, seven, eight.
One, two, three, four, other side.
One, two, three, grapevine.
Side, behind, side, tap.
Side, behind, side, tap.
Side, behind, last one.
Side, behind, box step.
One, last one, two.
Well done everyone!
I hope you had fun joining in with our line dance at home.
It made me feel "yee haw!"
Now remember, if you find something difficult, don’t give up.
Support and encourage each other and step by step you will get there.
Now let’s say it… “We are yee-haw!”
Are you ready? Let's do it…
"We are yee-haw!"
See you later, partners!
TV presenter and Strictly Come Dancing champion Oti Mabuse leads a country and western style line dance for the entire household to perform together. Oti teaches a series of moves that join together at the end with a big ‘Yee-haw’!
The activity uses basic line dancing inspired steps to build a simple dance routine to encourage us all to think just one step at a time when things get difficult.
The video can be used to inspire everyone to have fun, move together and encourage each other when things get difficult.
Parent / Carer Notes
Families can use this activity to encourage and strengthen connections with others in the home to provide greater stability and solidarity as a family unit. This can help families deal with change when it occurs and recognise how to work together to help each other and work together effectively.
We advise a parent or carer to review the Moodboosters video prior to showing it at home, and consider the activity’s suitability for space, accessibility requirements and how it may be received by the children taking part.
The NHS offers advice for parents and carers around supporting children and young people with their mental health, for more info visit here.
