6 of Radio 2’s most hilarious on-air moments of 2017

From the japes on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show to Sara Cox's infectious giggles, we can always rely on Radio 2 to give us a good chuckle. And while the station does a great job of laying on fantastic comedy, sometimes it's the unscripted on-air moments of hilarity which really make us laugh.

There have been so many funny Radio 2 moments in 2017 so far that we thought we'd remind you of a few of them below. And the best part? We're only half way through the year!

1. The amateur rugby team who accidentally found themselves playing Spain

"My VERY amateur rugby team realised, to our horror, we were playing Spain U23s"

Listener 'Rob' confesses to Simon Mayo how his team accidentally ended up playing Spain!

We love nothing more than a tale of underdogs rising against the odds. And while that's not quiiiiite what we got with this story from listener 'Rob,' read aloud by Simon Mayo, it was still an absolute rib-tickler.

Rob, a member of a "very, very amateur" rugby team, organised a tour to Benidorm. A combination of language barriers, and Rob's slight over-egging of his team's talents, led to a somewhat unexpected situation.

After a whole day and night of partying, Rob's team turned up to meet a side who looked a whole lot more professional. "The guys warming up looked quite good, and young, and fit, and well-rested...and sober. It turned out we were lining up against the Spanish Under 23 national team. To put this further into perspective, the average age of our team was 38, staying below 40 thanks mainly to two 19-year-olds, read Simon. "Almost all of the team were what would be considered to be unfit, and we had our oldest tour party member, our 78-year-old club president, starting in scrum half."

In front of 600 members of a paying crowd, Rob's team were defeated 106 nil. "That was only because we had to stop after 55 minutes, because we were incapable of moving any more."

Well, what can we say? Good on them for trying - even if they didn't score any tries.

2. Chris spots a crack in Moira's perfect pronunciation

What's got Chris and Moira giggling during the news?

Chris spots a crack in Moira's perfect pronunciation as she reads the 7.30am news.

She may have been brought up in Hackney, but if there's anyone we know for her cut glass pronunciation it's legendary news reader Moira Stuart.

Nevertheless, Chris Evans delightedly picked up on it when she dropped an 'h' during a 7.30am bulletin, saying "alf hour ago" in the manner of a proper Cockney.

Could a guest slot on EastEnders be up next? We can only live in hope!

3. Wrestlers bring their moves to the Jeremy Vine studio

"He's got his head in a neck grip!" - Wrestling is back!

Wrestlers Doug Williams and Mike Bird join Jeremy - can he keep up with their moves?

1970s style professional wrestling is surging in popularity again, so wrestling stars Doug Williams and Mike Bird joined Jeremy Vine in the studio to talk about the sport and show off their impeccable skills.

Jeremy's commentary during the madcap escapade, including such gems as "now how do you get out of that, do you twirl him?" is guaranteed to raise a smile.

4. Sally Traffic is accompanied by Rick Astley's band

Sally Traffic with Rick Astley's band!

Traffic reporting like you've never heard it before.

Listeners to Saturday Breakfast with Dermot had a treat when the team decided that Sally Traffic deserved live accompaniment from Rick Astley's band over which to read her traffic news.

The musicians strummed the bass and shook percussion instruments as the national treasure delivered her report, and Dermot got so into the groove he even started ad libbing and singing along.

"Settle down everyone," said Sally - but we know she loved it really.

5. Simon's dodgy accent chickens come home to roost

Simon's dodgy accents in 'Confessions' have finally got him in trouble!

Estonian's UK Ambassador Laurie Bambus isn't impressed with Simon's Estonian accent...

Simon Mayo is known for his...shall we say, "adventurous" accents, as he reads out listeners' darkest secrets and worst misdemeanours in his Confessions segment.

But after his rendition of, supposedly, an Estonian accent (which veered more into Italian, and even Transylvanian) he finally got a ticking off...from none other than the Estonian ambassador to the UK, Laurie Bambus.

"No, I really wouldn't recognise any Estonian accent in this story," he said. Well, that's Simon told!

6. Sara Cox gets into the groove with the Pop Master tune

As you surely saw, our lovely Sara Cox danced to Sounds of the 80s for 24 hours, aka A WHOLE DAY, for Comic Relief this year - raising over £1,000,000. (Don't miss her regular Sounds of the 80s show either, it's the only thing we want to boogie to on a Saturday night.)

While Sara did a fab job grooving on down with her glowsticks to tunes from the likes of Wham! and Kim Wilde, people were particularly tickled by the moment she found herself dancing to Radio 2's famous Popmaster theme tune. Watch, and enjoy.
