Did you know?

Place names in German often contain a clue about the sort of place they are in.

Brücke means 'bridge'. The town of Saarbrücken is home to an important bridge across the River Saar and Innsbruck means 'bridge over the River Inn'.

Burg means 'castle'. Salzburg has a large castle - die Festung Hohensalzburg - and Regensburg was built on the site of a Roman fortress.

Berg means 'mountain', so the names of places like Bamberg or Nürnberg suggest that they are on or near to higher land.
