Special qualities

Creativity

Creativity is the ability of a performer to be unusual, innovative and unique.

Quite often it is when a performer is faced with a problem that they come up with something unexpected by the opponent. Creativity can be shown through a skill, movement or a tactic.

Impact on performance

A tennis player with good creativity can trick an opponent easily. They can pretend to play a return and then at the last second lob the ball over the player near the net.

A basketball player with a lack of creativity facing a two versus one situation will not make a decision as quickly. This means they will tend to choose a similar option, which is easier for the defender to guess. The defender can then move to the obvious receiving player and close the space, giving that player less chance of success of getting to the basket.

A rugby team with a lack of creativity in their tactics will keep trying the same approach for the whole game and be unable to change the way they attack. This makes it very easy for the opponents to set up their defense and have much more chance of stopping opportunities for try scoring.

Quality of performance

Accuracy

Accuracy is the ability to perform movements and skills with precision. Quite often it is being able to direct an object to a small target area.

Impact on performance

Cricketer throws ball to wicket keeper and runs out a batsman

A cricket fielder with good accuracy can collect a moving ball and then throw the ball without the need for the wicket keeper having to move away from the stumps. This means they have much more chance of running a batter out.

An archer with less accuracy will send arrows further away from the centre and sometimes miss the scoring ring completely. This means their total score will be lower, giving them a smaller chance of winning.

A badminton player with good accuracy can play a range of shots to exact points, moving their opponent to the extremes of the court and therefore creating more space to hit the next shot into.
