Listen carefully
The children are walking in the woods with Jeanie. What sounds will they hear?
EXTERIOR FOREST - We open on three kids standing in the clearing of a forest. With them is a teacher named Jeanie. It’s a wintery day and everyone’s wrapped up to stay warm.
NARRATOR: Today Jeanie has taken the three kids on an adventure into the woods. Here they are going to learn all about sound.
JEANIE: Well we made it to my favourite spot. So, tell me this, what sounds can you hear around you?
The children look around themselves, then with a shrug in unison say;
CHILDREN: Nothing?
Jeanie spreads her arms around her and spins on the spot.
JEANIE: Nothing you say? The forest is alive with sounds! Let’s try again, but this time shut your eyes and listen reallllly carefully.
The kids shut their eyes.
JEANIE: Now, do you still think you can’t hear anything? Nothing at all??
Beth begins to jump up and down, she’s heard something and she’s really excited.
BETH: I hear something, I hear something! It’s… It’s… It’s birds!
JEANIE: That’s right! Open your eyes and have a look.
The children all open their eyes and see three birds in front of them. Bouncing around, pecking the earth. The children all gasp in unison. The noise startles the birds and they fly off, away from the noisy kids. They all look dissapointedly at the teacher.
JEANIE: That’s alright, never fear. There’s plenty more sounds to hear!
NARRATOR: Now the kids have all got the hang of it, there’s a whole world of sounds out there to hear.
First up is a stream splishing and splashing behind them. The kids all turn around to see it, just as a fish pops out from the surface. Next Patrick proclaims;
PATRICK: I hear a monster in the sky!
They look up expectantly/worriedly. All of a sudden an aeroplane erupts from one of the clouds in the sky and goes on over head. Patrick is relieved. Then, without warning Jeanies phone rings! jeanie frantically turns it off.
JEANIE: Oops
Jeanie looks embarassed.
EXTERIOR ROAD AT THE EDGE OF A FOREST - The crew are all heading back towards their bus. Jeanie puts her hands out, gesturing for them all to stop.
CHILDREN: Car coming!
Jeanie taps her ear to listen. She nods and they walk on.
INTERIOR BUS - Jeanie sits in the bus looking back at the children.
NARRATOR: So, the kids have all had a wonderful day out together, and they heard so many things. But can they remember them all?
KIM: Birds!
BETH: A stream!
PATRICK: A monst… I mean an aeroplane!
KIM: A car!
JEANIE: My phone…
They all laugh.
NARRATOR: I wonder what sounds they will hear next time?
End.
