The rhyming game
Beth, Kim and Patrick have fun trying to find words that sound almost the same.
Look around you and see if you can play the game too.
The three kids are sitting in the backseat of a car. Dad is driving up front.
DAD: Hey kids! Who wants to play the rhyming game?
They all excitedly answer in unison.
BETH, KIM, PATRICK: We do! We do!
PATRICK: Um, what’s the rhyming game?
DAD: Well, the rhyming game is a great game that teaches us to listen carefully to sounds. The challenge is to find two words that sound really alike, like cat… and bat!
KIM: But cats and bats aren’t the same? One’s a cute fluffy thing that sleeps all day and the other one’s a bat that flies at night turns into a vampire!
DAD: Well I’m not sure about the vampire bit, but you’re right, the animals aren’t the same at all, but the sounds in their names are. ’Bat’ and ’cat’. See? Oh, I’ve another one. ’Cat’ and ’fat’. Fat cat! Why don’t you all look around and see if you can find words that rhyme?
The kids all focus in, they’re all looking round them for a source of inspiration.
BETH: Hmm, A word that rhymes with… car!
Kim looks around and sees a star air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror.
KIM: Star!
DAD: Car, star. Very good Kim! Can you get one more?
PATRICK: Uhhh… Hair…?
Patrick says that while pointing at his own hair. He has an air of uncertainty in his answer.
DAD: Not quite, but very close! You see its all about that end bit of the word. Car… Star… Can you hear that ’ar’ sound? Whereas hair ends in an ’air’ sound. ’Ar’, ’Air’, ’Car’, ’Hair’. Can you hear the difference?
They all nod and then start the game again.
KIM: Sun!
Kim says this as she points out the window.
BETH: Run!
Someone runs past the car window as she points.
Patrick is looking a little bit sheepish from getting it wrong last time. Suddenly he looks animated and points at Kim.
PATRICK: Bun!!
Kim is just to about to take a bite of the bun and freezes as she’s been caught out.
DAD: Very good guys! You’re all right, Sun, run and bun all rhyme. Now Kim, I hope you’ve got enough of that bun to share!
End.
