Preventative measures for the avoidance of malaria.

Description

This outlines the strategies used to manage and improve disease control. The work of the Merlin Charity in Kenya is used as a case study. Merlin’s work combines practical measures, such as improving sanitation, as well as education. The economic impact of malaria at a personal and national level is also discussed in the clip.

Classroom Ideas

Students should list the various methods that can be used to control malaria - education, vector-control, vaccines, treatment. Research the pros and cons of each method, including cost and both short and long term effectiveness. Use as an example of a project which promotes community self-help and education. The clip could also be used as a stark example of the economic consequences of malaria on peasant farming communities and on a developing country as a whole.
