So let me get this straight. You're painting your city?
Oui. On crée ensemble un portrait de Marseille.
So you're painting a portrait of Marseille. Together?
ALL: Oui !
OK. While you do that… …I'll paint a portrait of my city. On est prêt ?
ALL: Ouais !
Je prends du vert.
Du vert !
Je mets du marron.
Du marron.
Du noir.
Du noir.
C'est beau !
Ce n'est pas beau !
Du jaune s'il te plaît.
Du jaune !
Je mets du bleu !
Du bleu !
Je mets de l'orange.
De l'orange !
Je n'aime pas l'orange.
J'ai du rouge !
Du rouge !
Du blanc !
Je mets du mauve !
J'aime le mauve !
So have you nearly finished?
ALL: Voici Marseille !
Bravo !
Ou habitez-vous ?
Moi j'habite ici.
Moi j'habite ici.
Et moi j'habite ici.
Moi j'habite ici. C'est très beau !
And yours? Erm mine… Well… Erm… Here it is.
C'est beau Ben !
THEY LAUGH
Yeah. Well it's French.
Impressionism.
Video summary
Ben is keen to improve his French. He links up online with friends in Marseille who are busy together painting a large picture of their city.
Ben decides that as well as watching Ingrid, Thibaud, Lili and Ulysse paint a picture of Marseille, he will draw a picture of his hometown.
As the children apply different colours to their painting, they talk about which colours they like and dislike - J'aime le mauve, je n'aime pas le marron.
Things get a little out of hand with a lot of paint ending up on Thibault, Lili, Ingrid, and Ulysse. Ben's drawing has also not gone quite to plan.
This clip is from the series Virtually There: France.
Teacher Notes
This could be used as a good listening activity by reading out a sequence of colours and asking the pupils to build a tower using multi-link cubes in the same colour order as their sequence.
It could also be used to support pronunciation by highlighting the final silent consonants in words like 'vert' and 'blanc', and practising expressing likes and dislikes, for example 'J'aime le vert', 'je n'aime pas le noir'.
It will also support the understanding of grammar by comparing how in English we say 'I like red', but in French it is 'I like the red' - 'J'aime le rouge'.
These clips could be used for teaching French at KS2 in England, Foundation KS1,KS2 in Northern Ireland, KS2 and KS3 in Wales and 2nd Level in Scotland.
