Create: a landscape painting
Landscape painting is a type of art that shows a scene from nature, such as the countryside, hills, mountains, a valley or a river.
Landscape paintings might also show people or animals but the focus is the scenery.
Some landscape paintings include buildings or scenes from a city. These are known as cityscapes. Some landscape paintings depict the sea. These are called seascapes.
You could create your own landscape painting, either from a scene that you know and like or you could create a landscape painting from your imagination.
Watch this video to get some handy hints to make your own masterpiece.
Joey Yu: Landscape painting is a type of art that often shows a scene from nature.
Landscape paintings have been popular for many years.
They might show the countryside, mountains, animals in a field, anything at all in the great outdoors. Let's paint a landscape ofour own!
You will need a sketchbook, a pencil, paintbrushes and paints.
To start, it helps to divide the picture in three horizontally. I'll sketch this out with my pencil.
The foreground is at the bottom. The midground is in the centre. And the background is at the top.
I'm drawing hills in this middle area. I'll add some trees growing on the hills. The trees are far away, so we drawthem small. This is called perspective.
I'm going to add a river to the foreground. It can get wider as it comes closer to us.
Now to add colour and texture using my paints. Things that are nearer can appear darker, so I'll use these darker shades here.
And much lighter shades in the background.
What do you think? Have a go for yourself, be inspired by nature, or why not create an imaginary landscape of your own?

Brain workout
In landscapes and cityscapes, you can see different 2D shapes.
As there are lots of buildings in a cityscape, there will be lots of rectangles and squares.
In a landscape you might see triangles and circles as you look at trees in the distance.
This article helps you to identify 2D shapes. Try the quizzes to test what you've learnt, then try to spot 2D shapes around your home or garden.
See if you can spot shapes in your surroundings on a walk with your family.

New skill
This week you could teach yourself a new skill and start coding with the micro:bit.
You don't need anything to get yourself started! You can start your coding journey straight away with the virtual micro:bit.
From creating your own animated pet to making computer games and electronic music, coding offers a world of endless possibilities.

Go explore: Rock hunter
Landscapes can look different depending on their geographical location and how they were formed. They can be made up of different types of rock.
Take a look at this video to find out about different kind of rocks and how they are formed.
There are some fun quizzes to see if your knowledge rocks!
Rock detectives
Can you tell your soft from your hard rock? KS2 Science

Activity
Go on a rock hunt around your local area with your family - how many different types of rock can you spot?
Can you think of ways to group and compare the rocks?
If you are near the coast, you could also see how many shells you can find.
Creative writing challenge
Descriptive writing
Write a short paragraph about the landscape you have painted. Describe what it is like.
To make your landscape description come alive, you could use adjectives.
Adjectives
An adjective is a word that describes a noun (the name of a thing or a place).
Example: The orange leaves fell gracefully to the hard, unforgiving ground.
Metaphor and simile
You could also use metaphors and similes in your description.
A metaphor is a word or a phrase used to describe something as if it were something else.
- You are my sunshine.
- He is a star.
- A blanket of snow.
A simile describes something by comparing it to something else using the words like or as:
- It was as cold as ice.
- Her hair was as white as snow.
- It was wriggly like a worm.
