The effects of abuse

Abuse harms its victims in three key ways.

  1. Physical:
    • visible injuries harm their appearance;
    • sleep and eating disorders;
    • flashbacks;
    • post-traumatic stress;
    • addiction and substance abuse;
    • sexually transmitted infections.
  2. Emotional:
    • depression;
    • suicidal thoughts;
    • self-harm;
    • stress;
    • addiction;
    • challenging behaviour;
    • trust issues;
    • fear and anxiety.
  3. Social:
    • relationship and family difficulties;
    • unable to form relationships;
    • social isolation.
