Social media - promoting a business

Using social media is a low cost way for businesses to promote both themselves and the products or services they sell.

Businesses could:

  • set up a Facebook page and post special offers to anyone who ‘likes’ their page
  • create their own YouTube channel and add fun or informative videos
  • tweet interesting and unusual tweets about themselves and their products or services
  • send out tips on Twitter about how to use their products or services
  • follow customers and influential people such as entrepreneurs, journalists, bloggers and celebrities

Xbox is a brand that uses social media effectively.

The brand's Twitter page is constantly updated and regularly sends out news, promotions and powerful advertising photos. They also regularly tweet messages that offer customer resources as well as discussions on common topics.

In addition to this, there is a function called @XboxSupport which provides almost immediate answers to gamers’ issues. This has led to the accolade of being awarded a Guinness World Record for being the most responsive brand on Twitter. Xbox has more than 11.6 million followers and more than 5,000 responses every day.

Many companies now recognise the importance of using social media effectively and ensure that they interact and respond to their customers online.
